These 'matoi' or standards are in Tokyo Fire Museum. The symbols are either typographic or emblematic and the moulding is of an incredible standard. During the Edo period, fire stations used them to mark the location of a fire but now they're used for ceremonial purposes. It's a great museum, free, child-friendly and fascinating. If you're ever in Tokyo, put it on your list.
